Ten Tors Walk

Our annual Ten Tors walk across Bodmin Moor each May is  an event used to help other groups to raise money for themselves. We charge a fee for teams of four people to enter, they can then raise money for their own good causes.

For this fee the Lions mark and marshal the route across the moor, provide drinking water at points along the route and with the help of Cornwall Search and Rescue provide First aid and evacuation if needed.

The event was started in 1981 by Lion Gerald Worden and Alistair Pellow. That first year the route was marked by wooden stakes with cut up plastic bags attached. These were all driven in by hand, quite a hard days work. The event raised just under £2,500. The 2007 walk raised well over £20,000.

TEN TORS 2009 UPDATEd 22nd June

Yet again we had great weather for our walk on Bodmin moor, the walk, started on time by Bodmin's Town Crier Nick Prideaux was well supported & very successful.
The Ten Tors raised in the region of £25,000 for the many good causes. The top team & trophy winner this year raised just over £1,200 for Help the Heroes with many teams collecting between £500 & £1000. Next years event will be on Sunday 9th May, invitations will go out towards the end of Feb to all who entered this year & information as to how to enter will also be on this website. Remember all the money you collect you donate to your cause we only charge an entry fee, if you haven't got a favourite charity you could walk for Cornwall Search & Rescue, they help us a lot by providing good medical & evacuation cover on the walk, they are all unpaid volunteers but need to cover costs for equipment, transport & fuel.

NEW ROUTE FOR 2008 update

The new route was a great success we had at least 50 more walkers than normal, that along with the very warm weather meant we were all kept on our toes trying to ensure the walkers had enough water. As predicted the walk was harder but we had a lot of positive feedback & most people seemed to have enjoyed the day. We estimate £25,000 was raised for all the many good causes.
The walk was started this year by the chairman of St Breward Football Club Mr Chris Greenaway introduced by Bodmin's Town Crier Nick Prideaux

NEW ROUTE FOR 2008

This year we are using a new route for our annual Ten Tors walk on Bodmin Moor. The walk will START & FINISH at ST BREWARD FOOTBALL CLUB.
The route will take in new Tors to include Brown Willy and will then rejoin the old route at Showery Tor, back over Roughtor etc to St Breward. During the planning of the new route a group of Lions walked the new section & are pictured below at the top of Brown Willy as you can we did test it in the rain.

TEN TORS 2007
Bodmin Town Crier Nick Prideaux was the official starter for the 2007 walk. The walk started on time, the early mist had the visibility down to less than 50 yards at times, and we all thought the start may have to be delayed for safety reasons but by 10:00 all was well. It was ideal walking weather and it stayed dry until after everyone was booked off at St Breward.

TEN TORS 2006

The 2006 walk, our 25th, was started by District Governor Lion Dave Rosson. We had very good weather for walking it was dry, not a lot of cloud, and not too hot.

Teams signed on and each team member was given an identity number. Over 74 teams entered and we had 258 people actually start the walk, We estimate £20,000 to £25,000 was raised in sponsorship.  The highest sponsored team was yet again a team from Laddock who raised £3,600 plus. Several teams raised amounts in the £200 to £1000 region.

Being our 25th year we decided to award a special prize, we awarded a prize of two bottles of "Cornwall" (Cornwall's answer to Champagne produced by Camel Valley Wines), to the 25th team of 4 walkers to complete the walk. The winning team were from The Boscastle & Crackington Haven Gig Club.
