THE
LIONS CLUB OF BODMIN.

Club History
The Lions club of Bodmin was Chartered (Formed) 28th April 1970.
At that time "LIONS" Part of Lions International was quite a new
organization to Cornwall and the new Lions worked hard to gain the good
reputation we have today. The club was chartered with 15 members, 2 of whom are
still with us. The membership has grown over the years and the current
membership is 33. We are an all male club and have members aged from their 20s
to their 80s.
News
Firework update
The weather was kind to us, we had a clear night, nice black sky to show off the
fireworks. Fantastic display yet again by Celebration Pyrotechnics. This years
Guy competition was well supported with 13 guys, all the guys were paraded to
the fire on a floodlit trailer, all watched by a crowd of at least 6000. The
presentation of prizes & distribution of profits will happen as usual in Feb
of 2010
Prices stay the same for Nov 5th
This years Joint committee firework display is promising to be
the best yet with more money being spent on fireworks than ever before, but the
ticket price stays the same. Advance tickets from Bricknell's, Stan May Stores,
Football Club, Morison's & Martin & Budge Adult £2.50 Child £1.50 on
the gate Adult £4.00 Child £3.00
For this low low price you will see probably the best Nov5th firework
display in Cornwall. We don't aim to make money on this event, only to cover
costs & put on a spectacular safe display for everyone.
At this years display you will see approximately £7,000 worth of
fireworks, what great value for money!
Senior Citizens Party
The party this year will be on Sunday 22nd Nov application forms are now
available from Stan May Stores, ETS or Lion President Paul Gitsham 01208 78029
Great
loss to Bodmin Lions
We
are sad to report the death of Lion Colin Hicks. Colin died as the result of a
motor cycle accident whilst on holiday in Spain. Colin, President in 1987-88,
chaired many a committee & was a great organizer. We will all miss his
smiling face & catch phrase “leave it with me”.
Our second Loveny Meets Jazz
at Bodmin College
Held on Saturday 1st Aug was well supported. We were entertained by a
wide selection of music & singing by both the Loneny Male Voice Choir, fresh
back from an international choir concert in Italy & the saxophone quartet
"4 Sax Sake" from Bodmin College.

A few Lions went along to the Horizon Club's party &
annual awards evening on Thursday 30th July, our Sports personality of the year
trophy was presented by Lion secretary & past President Jon Hancock
Country Fair has had to be cancelled due to
the state of the ground in the Priory Park. Bodmin Lions are very sorry but the ground we use for Country
Fair is saturated & with the forecast of more rain on Friday we have taken
the decision to cancel.

Fireworks joint committee presentation
Tue 10th Feb 2009 saw the presentation of cheques to schools & youth
organisations from Bodmin & surrounding Parishes. Presentations were made with a cash total of
over £7000. The joint committee were a little disappointed that some cheques
lay uncollected at the end of the evening. The uncollected money will now be
passed on to another charity as some local organisations don't seem to need
it.
Christmas Sleigh update
Was it us? Was the snow on Monday 2nd Feb down to Bodmin Lions? It could
have been, we managed to get hold of Father Christmas to oversee the
presentation of a cheque for £1,500 to Cornwall Hospice Care I think he
arranged the snow to make himself feel at home at a time when he would normally
be resting after his Christmas adventures.
Pictured below is Paul Brinsley of Cornwall Hospice Care receiving the cheque
from Lion President & as you can see Father Christmas was there.
We are sad to announce the death of Friend of Bodmin Lions
George Milton.
George was a member for over 25 years & a leading light in our pantomimes
along with his wife Jean.
George was made a Friend of Bodmin Lions after his resignation due to ill
health.
The funeral was held on Friday 23rd Jan 2009.
Lion President Kevin & Lions of Bodmin
wish everyone all the best for 2009.
We also thank you for all your support during 2008
Sleigh Collections went well.
In spite of the weather Lions turned out each night to bring Father
Christmas to Bodmin's Children both young & old. We also managed three
Saturdays at ASDA Bodmin.
The pictures below were
taken on one of our wet nights out and about.

We also managed to get a team together to visit Lanivet with
Father Christmas in an Antlered Donkey drawn Sleigh.

Collections this year were in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care
& Lions Charities, Due to the generosity of the people we have meet over the
last three weeks we will be able to donate a tidy sum to the hospice, We will
announce the amount early in the new year
We were also somewhat bemused by the vary wide variety of
gifts in Santa’s tins; in fact we felt inspired to write some new words for
the music of the Twelve Days of Christmas
On the twelfth day
of Lions’ Sleigh the children gave to me
Twelve Sticky Sweeties
Eleven Lists for Santa
Ten Old Tanners
Nine Pounds in Pennies
Eight Italian Lire
Seven Euro Cent Coins
Six Hungarian Forints
A Five Pound Note
Four U.S. Quarters
Three French Francs
Two Car Wash tokens
And one very grubby half pee
And if anybody is missing a large grey
button, we’ve got it!
Seriously, thanks everybody, especially ASDA for having
us on three Saturdays and to Western Power Distribution for use of their
facilities.
Remembrance Sunday
Club representatives attended the annual remembrance parade in Priory Park,
our wreath this year being laid by past president Phil Wrixon.
Fireworks 2008
Wednesday Nov 5th saw a good turnout of helpers to marshal Bodmin's annual firework
display. The event is put on each year by a joint committee of town
organisations Lions club, Rotary club, Chamber of Commerce, the Football club,
& the Rugby club along with help from the town council. It is run to provide the town with a
good, safe, firework display at a low price. Any profits are donated to schools
and youth organisations in Bodmin and the surrounding area.
This year approx £6000 worth of fireworks were set off by Celebration
Phyrotechnics in a fantastic
display (probably the largest Nov 5th display in Cornwall) all watched by a Good
crowd. The bonfire as usual was very good thanks to the Fire Builders & our fire tender
Clive.
Precious Lives Presentation
At our meeting on Monday the 1st Sept Cheques were presented to Mr
Foley
ably assisted by Jennie Blackhall, fundraiser for the precious lives appeal.
The total presented was over £1300 & was made up of profits from the Lions Loveny
Meets Jazz concert, a donation from the Loveny Male Voice Choir equal
to their fee for the concert & personal donations to the event. Also in the
total was a donation from Bodmin's Joint Fireworks committee, this was
uncollected money from their presentation evening last Feb.

Pictured above, Jenny with Mr Foley, Loveny Choir members,
some of whom are also Lions, Lion President Kevin & Past President Jon
exchanging greetings with Mr Foley.
LOVENY MEETS JAZZ
Over 150 people had a great evening at Bodmin College with Loveny Male Voice Choir, Bodmin Collage Jazz
Quartet (4 Sax Sake) & Soloist Sandy Clapp. All Profits to go to the Precious
Lives Appeal. Many thanks to all that helped.

Bodmin
Lions go Public
After supporting
Bodmin Rugby Juniors for a while, Bodmin Lions were offered the chance to show
off their sponsorship with a giant notice on the clubhouse wall where it can be
seen from the A 38 and A 30 approach road at Turf Down. The
Lions Club of Bodmin are delighted to be able to help the junior teams from
monies donated by the townspeople during the Lions’ many fund raising
events.

It is with great sadness I have to announce the Death of a Charter member
of The Lions Club of Bodmin. Past District Governor & three times
club president Lion Tony Webb.
The club extends it's sympathies to Cliff, Sue, Richard & Beryl,
The Funeral took place 4pm Wed 14th of May 2008 at St Petroc's Church Bodmin. It
was well attended by Family, Friends, Lions from far & wide and representatives
of the many organisations Tony had been a part of during his very active life.
President Jon & other Bodmin Lions did a cheque presentation at Vitalise
Churchtown on Fri 1st Feb 2008. The money was donated to help towards a new
pool hoist shown in use in the pictures below Click here
for more information about Vitalise Churchtown.

With Christmas & New year celebrations behind us Bodmin
Lions are hard at work on the 2008 program of events.
The Lions Club of Bodmin would like to thank everyone who has supported
us throughout 2007 and in previous years, and we wish you all a prosperous 2008.
Your donations help us to help others less well off than ourselves.
Everyone in Lions gives their time totally free & we all pay an annual
subscription to cover Club administration. Charges at some of our events cover
the cost of things like insurance & other licence fees, but in general all
other money collected by us all gets used for charitable causes.
Father Christmas Collections Dec 2007
During Dec we have been out and about helping Father Christmas meet as many
children (young and old) as we can. We were out 14 evenings & have made
three Saturday visits To ASDA Bodmin. Father Christmas is sorry if you missed
him with the Lions but he will visit again in secret on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Fair 2007
Our annual Christmas fair was on Dec 8th. Report on Christmas
Fair page.
Cancer Research 10k walk
Once again the Lions helped at Lanhydrock this time it was a walk on Sun 4th
Nov. No photos this time but we understand approx £35,000 was raised by
the walkers.
Cancer Research 10k run
Lions helped marshal the 10k run at Lanhydrock on Sun 9th of Sept 2007 & after the
event Lion president Jon took this photo. At the time he didn't notice one of
his pride putting his best side forward, but with the help of the Lions Logo we
felt we could still publish. If you look at the report for the Go Goss event in
April you may notice a very strong resemblance to the cycle rider.

Carnival 2007
Our week kicked off on Saturday 4th Aug. Report on the Carnival
Page.
Appreciation Award
Unfortunately Adrian Evans, Bodmin Collage Jazz Orchestra leader, was unable
to attend our handover and presentation night. Lion President Jon Hancock caught
up with him at his Retirement Jazz Cafe at the Collage to present him with a
Lions Appreciation award.

Bodmin Heritage day
As usual Lions helped the Heritage committee by putting up the bunting in
Fore Street, & a few of our members took part in the Hunting of the Beast
play that is acted out in various parts of the town during the day. Pictured
below is immediate past President Kevin showing off his new facelift, I hadn't
realised how hard a time we had given him last year.

GO GOSS update
On Monday 16th of July the presentation of Cheques to the various organisations
took place on the old A30 with the notorious Goss Moor Bridge in the background.
Pictured below on the right is Bodmin Lions President Jon Hancock, part of the
presentation party, presenting £4,400 to Children's Hospice SW. Other Cheques
were presented, the Total raised by the GO GOSS walk was in excess of £18,000.
Spectacle RECYCLING
Bodmin Lions recently took over the recycling project started by
Newquay Lions approximately 30 years ago. We are going to do it in conjunction
with Chichester Lions & Le Havre Lions. Le Havre Lions run a company called
Medico France, they have the facilities to grade & polish the specs before
sending them on to mainly third world countries or anywhere in the world they
are required. Our first delivery to Chichester took place on Wed 16th May in a
van loaned to us by Bodmin Jail restaurant.
Below Lion Allan Tidy of Chichester, Lion Bill May & Lion Dave Williams
of Bodmin with the Bodmin Jail Van outside Chichester's sorting HQ at The
Apuldram Centre. The next two pictures show the specs delivered by us
& some sorted specs ready to be transported to Lions in Le Havre France.

Bodmin Lions help the Lifeboat
When Bodmin Lions heard that Padstow Lifeboat needed help, they answered the
call. The lifeboat crew needs the chance of a hot meal
after a long rescue so the Lions have provided a brand new cooker and freezer to
be installed in the lifeboat station at Mother Ivy’s Bay. In return the
coxswain invited the Lions to tour the exciting new ‘Spirit of Padstow’ in
its purpose built accommodation. The club members enjoyed a most interesting
evening and were fascinated to shown around by Alan Tarby and his very friendly
crew. Although the R.N.L.I. have provided this wonderful facility, the Lions
were pleased to be able to supply a little extra comfort direct to the people
who are literally at the sharp end of this vital service
