Lions had organised Bodmin's carnival from 1972 until 1996, when insurance and policing problems caused its demise. August 2004 saw its revival and the Lions Carnival was Back. Unfortunately after the three years reported below we were unable to put on a Carnival for 2008.
The 2005 Carnival was held on 13th Aug, in spite of the weather support was quite good but the street collection was down by 30% on 2004. CARNIVAL 2006 The 2006 was held on Aug 12th and as usual started from the Fair Park, went along Higher Bore St, down Fore St to Priory Park were we presented the trophies and prizes. The Carnival was quite successful with entries well up on last year. The street collection was also up a little but at just over £1000 it fell well short of the £1 per person it would have been nice to see. Putting on an event like Carnival is quite expensive, but thanks to the Cornish Guardians advertising campaign and hard work by Lions we had terrific sponsorship for this years Carnival, the main sponsors are listed below. Mid Cornwall Brokers, Lighthouse electrical Suppliers, Woolacotts Electrical suppliers, Bara Cafe,Jai Jewellers, Fleurtations Florist, Fusion Restaurant, Moods Dress Shop, Keith Chapman Accountants, Nicals Restaurant and Bar, Bodmin Herb Centre, KBM Fire Services, Bodmin Funeral Services' Eclipse Night Club, Golden Fry Fish and Chip Restaurant, HSBC Bank, Kellys Ice Cream, Arubablu Hairdressers & Martin Cummings Car Sales for providing the car for the Deputy Mayoress We would also like to thank Bodmin Town Council and the volunteers who helped us with the road closures. Here are a few pictures and as in the past KELTAPIX have published more.
2007 Queen & Fairy Queen Friday 27th April saw the choosing of our Queens for this year, we had 16 entries for the Fairy Queen class, but unfortunately no Carnival Queens. Last years Queen pictured below with past president Clive said she would do another year. The Fairy Queen competition was very competitive and was won by Olivia Pedlar pictured below with retiring Fairy queen Stephanie Hotham To make the Carnival a success we need lots of entries (entry is free), and lots of people out to watch and support. If everyone in the crowd managed to donate £1 maybe we could build and extend the Carnival to the 2 ½ Hour parade it was in years gone by. CARNIVAL WEEK This year we are trying to do a bit more.
The Victorian Street Market took place on Sat 4th Aug in Honey Street Bodmin, The number of stalls was lower than expected but the quality was good with stallholders dressing up for the part. The people were entertained by the Lions Barrel Organ complete with rotating Lion. The organ was looked after by organ grinders Dave Williams & Bill May (Dave is in the picture below). This was the first year for the event & it went quite well, we hope to build on it for next year. QUIZ & BAR-B-Q Both events took place at the Weavers & were well supported the money raised all went towards Carnival week. Below is a picture of the Bar-B-Q night and the presentation. The Lions thank all at the weavers for their support. Also in Carnival week The Hole in The Wall supported us by running a raffle. pictured below is their presentation to us, again a big thank you from Lions. CARNIVAL DAY Carnival day kicked off with Lions giving visitors to Mount Folly the chance to win a car all you had to do was guess the registration number
Later in the afternoon there was music & entertainment on mount folly until the Carnival started at 6:30pm the entries were down on last year & the street collection was again disappointing at just over £800. So a big thank you to all our sponsors & supporters without whom the carnival would have been a total loss. The Lions will have to think hard before next years carnival can be planned. This was the last Carnival to be organized by Bodmin Lions.
